 Seis livros. Seis pessoas. Seis meses e milhares de desencontros e dúvidas em uma comédia dramática escrita e dirigida pela roteirista de Memórias de uma Gueixa, Robin Swicord, em seu primeiro longa-metragem. Baseado em um livro homônimo de Karen Joy Fowler, a obra gira em torno de pessoas cujas vozes turbulentas gritam em unÃssono a busca por uma razão de vida. Desastrados em suas fraquezas, aparecem nas cenas iniciais como vÃtimas de seus rumos, formando todos diversos desejos e um único sentido: são fortes amantes da obra de Jane Austen.
Reunidos por circunstâncias casuais e amizades longevas, cinco mulheres e um homem – Jocelyn, Allegra, Prudie, Sylvia, Bernadette e Grigg – decidem formar um clube de leitura das obras de Jane Austen. No clube, cada um fica responsável por um romance e, mês a mês, seguimos o rumo de desenvolvimento das personagens ao longo dos dias, na seqüência das obras Emma, Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility e Persuasion. As leituras vão se transformando em campos minados ao passo que as histórias da autora vão ressonando como vida real na trajetória de cada um dos participantes.
Em um momento clÃmax do filme, Emily Blunt (em excelente desempenho) deve decidir o destino de suas ações quando vê no sinalizador de pedestres a mensagem “WHAT JANE WOULD DO?” ao invés de “WALK”. Ela está entre os limites de atravessar uma fraqueza em prol de uma atitude sem RAZÃO, mas acaba trilhando pelos desvelos da SENSIBILIDADE.
O Clube de leitura de Jane Austen (The Jane Austen Book Club) é um filme simples e despretensioso e faz as vezes de portador das bandeiras que balançam no alto pelas guerras mas encontram porto seguro no reencontro e na aceitação: do século XIX ao século XXI…em prol da vitória do amor.
